From School Math to Contest Math: What Actually Changes
School math and contest math overlap, but they reward different habits. School often rewards mastering the method just taught. Contest math asks the student to choose a method when no one announces the chapter.
For the 2026-27 cycle, the MAA lists AMC 10/12 A on November 5, 2026 and AMC 10/12 B on November 13, 2026.

AMC 10 covers elementary algebra, basic geometry, area and volume formulas, elementary number theory, and elementary probability.
AMC 10 excludes advanced topics like trigonometry, advanced algebra, and advanced geometry.
AMC 10/12 policy does not allow calculators, so number sense and clean scratch work matter.
The chapter label disappears.
In school, the worksheet often tells the student what tool to use. Factoring day uses factoring. Similar triangles day uses similar triangles.
On a contest, the student has to notice the tool from the structure of the problem. That is a different skill from carrying out the tool once it is named.
Contest math adds selection, compression, and checking.
Selection means choosing which problem to attack and which approach to try. Compression means finding the short path instead of doing every possible calculation. Checking means catching answers that do not match the constraints.
These habits can be trained. They are not personality traits. A student can learn to pause before solving, name the structure, and choose a path deliberately.
Ask: What kind of object is this problem really about?
Ask: Is there a smaller example?
Ask: What answer choices can be eliminated before full solving?
Do not abandon foundations. Use them differently.
Contest math still depends on school foundations. Algebra fluency, geometry facts, and probability basics matter. The difference is that those tools must be available without being announced.
That is why a good AMC plan alternates topic repair with mixed practice. Topic repair builds the tool. Mixed practice teaches the student when to use it.
The student should move from I know the unit to I can recognize the structure.
