An AMC 10 Summer Prep Plan That Fits Around School

Summer prep works best when it is light enough to survive and specific enough to matter. The goal is not to fill every week with math. The goal is to enter the school year with a clear contest profile.

Start with signal

Do one baseline before making a plan.

The first useful summer step is a timed baseline. Not five practice tests. One honest set, reviewed carefully.

Record solved, skipped, guessed, and missed problems. Then label each miss by cause: content, reading, timing, arithmetic, or problem selection.

Use a repeatable rhythm, not a heroic schedule.

For a student with roughly twelve weeks and three to five hours available each week, a sustainable rhythm has three parts: one focused topic repair, one short mixed set, and one review block. The review block is where the learning compounds.

Those numbers are assumptions, not a prescription. A newer student may need more foundation time; a student already near their goal may need more timed execution. If fewer than twelve weeks remain, preserve the baseline and review loop instead of compressing every activity into an exhausting schedule.

Repair one high-leverage foundation at a time.

Use the baseline to choose one or two gaps that affect many problems. A shaky ratio model, weak modular arithmetic, or incomplete triangle toolkit may create losses across several difficulty bands.

Keep mixed practice in the week so the student still has to recognize which tool applies. Pure topic worksheets can build a method while hiding the recognition gap that appears on a contest.

Weeks 5–8

Shift from knowing tools to selecting them under time.

Introduce short timed sets and require a first-pass decision on every problem: solve now, skip, or return. Review whether the decision was justified, not only whether the final answer was correct.

Maintain an error log with five causes: content, recognition, reading, execution, and strategy. The categories prevent every miss from turning into another chapter to study.

Recognition: the tool was known but not identified.

Reading: a condition or requested quantity was missed.

Execution: algebra, arithmetic, or verification broke down.

Strategy: time or problem selection was misallocated.

Weeks 9–12

Use full contests as checkpoints, then make the plan smaller.

A full contest now tests integration: pacing, stamina, guessing decisions, and whether the repaired topics survive under pressure. Leave enough time after each contest for a careful postmortem.

When school starts, reduce volume and raise precision. Short timed sets, careful review, and a few high-value repairs are usually better than a large pile of unfocused problems. The November 5 and November 13, 2026 dates reward execution, not hours collected.
