Five Mistakes Strong Students Make on the AMC 10

Strong school math students can still underperform on the AMC 10 because contest math tests judgment under pressure. The issue is often not intelligence. It is execution.

Mistake 1

They treat every problem as equally deserving.

Contest time is limited. A strong student can lose points by spending too long proving they can solve a problem that should have been skipped for now.

The fix is to practice first-pass decisions. Can I solve this cleanly? Can I make progress quickly? Is this a return-later problem?

Mistake 2

They solve the problem they expected to read.

Many avoidable misses begin in the first line. A small phrase like integer, distinct, positive, or not can change the entire problem.

The fix is a constraint pass before calculation. Mark domain restrictions, what must be counted, and whether the question asks for a value, a number of possibilities, or a probability.

Mistake 3

They treat verification as optional cleanup.

A familiar-looking result can survive clean algebra and still answer the wrong quantity. Verification should be part of the solution path, not whatever happens if time remains.

The student can estimate magnitude, substitute a result, test a small case, check units or parity, and compare against the answer choices. The right check depends on the structure.

Mistake 4

They record answers but not failure causes.

Doing more problems helps only if the student learns from the old ones. A pile of completed sets can hide the same mistake repeated many times.

Label each miss as content, recognition, reading, execution, or strategy. A content miss may need instruction. A recognition miss needs mixed practice. An execution miss needs a different verification habit. The category changes the repair.

They protect the identity of being strong instead of studying the miss.

A strong student may avoid reviewing misses because each miss feels like evidence against them. That can produce fast solution-reading, vague labels such as careless, or a rush to a harder problem.

Parents can make review neutral and precise. Ask what information the miss provides, which category it belongs to, and what behavior will change on the next set.

Turn every practice set into a five-column diagnostic.

For each missed, guessed, or unusually slow problem, record the problem number, first wrong decision, error category, repair action, and retest date. Keep the entry short enough that the student will actually use it.

Review the log weekly. Repeated categories reveal the bottleneck more reliably than one total score. When a repair works on a new mixed set, mark the evidence instead of assuming the weakness is permanently solved.
