How Hard Is AIME Qualification, Really?
AIME qualification is hard because it combines content depth, speed, accuracy, and year-to-year cutoff pressure. Planning around a fixed magic score is less useful than building the habits that survive different contests.
For the 2026-27 cycle, the MAA lists AMC 10/12 A on November 5, 2026 and AMC 10/12 B on November 13, 2026.

The hard part is the combination.
A student can know the algebra and still lose AIME range because they are too slow. A student can be fast and still lose it through small arithmetic leaks. A student can solve hard practice problems and still choose the wrong contest problems under pressure.
The strongest prep does not treat AIME qualification as one skill. It trains content, timing, skip discipline, and verification together.

Train for margin, not the minimum.
Because cutoffs change, the safer planning question is not How do we scrape by? It is Where can this student create margin?
Margin may come from cleaning early misses, adding a repeatable counting method, improving geometry diagrams, or learning when to leave a problem. A diagnostic should identify which of those has the biggest payoff for this student.
