Marquise entered technology after experience in football, the United States Navy, sales, financial services, and business. Technical coaching helped give structure to the work of turning his discipline, accountability, and communication into growing engineering capability.

Marquise brought substantial discipline and resilience, completed the work, and continued developing beyond the coaching relationship. Pristone's role was to provide technical structure, feedback, and a standard of increasing independence.
Marquise wanted greater ownership over his future and saw software engineering as a way to develop a technical skill set he could use to build meaningful products. The transition required an entirely new way of thinking.
He had to move from understanding software as a user to reasoning about how applications, backend systems, APIs, databases, infrastructure, automation, and security fit together. The process was not linear: some concepts began from first principles, and periods of uncertainty had to become part of the work rather than a reason to stop.
His previous experience did not substitute for technical skill. It did provide durable capabilities that became useful as the technical demands increased.

The intervention
The objective was not exposure to the largest possible list of technologies. It was to help Marquise become increasingly capable of reasoning through technical problems himself.
New concepts were treated as new. The work emphasized foundations strong enough to support increasingly complex implementation and systems reasoning.
Difficulty was treated as evidence about the next learning priority—not as evidence that Marquise did not belong in engineering.
The standard progressed from following an explanation to making decisions, explaining them, debugging failures, and continuing without being handed the next answer.
Observed capability
Marquise continued developing across frontend and backend engineering. He later described his professional work as spanning the areas below and became a full-stack software engineer and cofounder of Lenox Systems.
